Community Shopping
Many people just cannot get to centralised shopping schemes. SPAR Scotland means more than just shops, our stores are key community facilities providing top up supplies and even emergency supplies without the need to travel miles or wait in huge queues.

Some communities would disappear without the service and personal contact offered by many of our stores.  Many stores offer bill payment facilities, operate banks and post-offices, and provide a focal point for community contact.

Obviously community stores and local stores are fuel efficient, not only saving the customer money, but protecting the environment.

SPAR Scotland is involved in many security initiatives helping the regeneration of community spirit.

SPAR and Charity
We all know someone who has, or has had cancer. You yourself may have even been affected by the disease, which impacts our lives often without warning or prejudice.

That's why SPAR is helping to support local cancer care through its partnership with Macmillan Cancer Relief, a UK cancer charity.

The SPAR Charitable Fund has donated £240,000 to fund six Macmillan Nurse posts across the UK. Macmillan Cancer Relief offers specialist cancer care and treatment from the moment of diagnosis, providing vital psychological support and practical advice to cancer patients and their families.

Additionally our staff are regularly involved in many fund raising initiatives both nationally and locally including Children in Need and Caring for Kids.

What is the Keep It Local campaign?
The Keep it Local campaign aims to fight back against the destruction of the local community, highlight the plight of local business people and keep local shops and businesses open for the local customer. Whether it is reversing unfavourable legislation, fighting unfair competition from the major supermarket multiples or supporting local suppliers by stocking their produce, SPAR is committed to spearheading this campaign.

Last year, SPAR commissioned the largest independent research study of its kind to find out what consumers thought of their local shopping area/high street. Over 2000 consumers were asked what shops and services were essential to a local community and what effect the loss of those shops would have. Overwhelmingly, the respondents stated that they fully supported their local stores and services.

SPAR and the Environment
We all have a responsibility to protect our environment for future generations.

SPAR Scotland is at the forefront of environmentally positive action.

SPAR Scotland has made arrangements for SPAR Stores to comply with packaging waste recycling obligations through the Packaging Management Group (PMG).

SPAR Scotland optimises the use of recycled packaging.

Our Stores employ ozone friendly equipment purchasing policies.

Energy efficient initiatives have been deployed to reduce use of fossil fuels.

Other systems have been updated in our stores to protect our valuable natural resources.

SPAR Scotland adopts responsible purchasing policies to ensure that products are sourced from suppliers with superior standards of due diligence, care and food & hygiene safety. All suppliers are audited either at a national or local level to ensure adherence to these high standards.
